Periodicals like Conde Nast, GQ, New York Times, and Vogue praise shop owner Scott Corey’s Santa Fe Vintage Outpost as one of the best reasons to visit Santa Fe…
I think they’re underselling it.
Corey’s tastefully curated Southwestern vintage clothing and jewelry reminds visitors why Southwestern style has lingered in the romantic imagination of fashion designers for nearly 100 years. His expert merchandising functions as visual shorthand to everything that Southwestern style is and should be.
It’s little wonder that Santa Fe Vintage draws big-name designers and international visitors eager to score a one-of-a-kind Chimayo hand-woven jacket, Pendleton coat, or historic ranch wear brand you’ve never heard of but wish you had. One can’t help but wonder: How does Corey find such remarkable pieces? Speaking as a novice Southwestern vintage apparel hunter, I can tell you that it’s not easy.
Corey travels the American West, leveraging his considerable charms, to gain access to long-neglected barns and basements. His dogged determination has resulted in the finest Southwestern vintage clothing collection you’ll ever find in one place.
Each garment, perfectly weathered by honest labor and time, seems to have its own story. Corey has a few stories of his own, too. If you’re lucky, and smart enough to linger a while, he might just share them with you. You’ll leave with your pocketbook lighter, but your imagination richer.
Toward the end of your visit, take a little extra time to try on the only contemporary merchandise in the store: The stunning, handcrafted jewelry of co-owner Julienne Barth. Her modern yet rustic silver, turquoise and leather creations are the perfect counterpoint to update vintage Southwestern garments.
Santa Fe Vintage Outpost is open Thursday through Sunday from 1pm to 7pm. If you plan well in advance, you may phone for an appointment to visit the much-larger Santa Fe Vintage Showroom which contains a much broader American vintage collection.
