Style Spotlight: The Great Southwestern Antique & Vintage Show for Fabulous Vintage Fashions
The Southwestern fashion trend is riding high, so take a road trip for authentic styles from the Great Southwestern Antique & Vintage Show. I visited this show two years ago and was knocked off my Cuban heels by all the AMAZING stuff.
When & Where
From August 2-4, over 150 antique dealers will gather at Albuquerque’s New Mexico State Fair Grounds to sell antiques, Native American art, vintage textiles, furniture, historic photos, jewelry and more. The show is brilliant and well-stocked in all categories, but it’s “the more” part that put the pow in my peyote.)
Clothing and accessories, my friends! While it’s not truly a vintage fashion show, there’s plenty there to entertain die-hard Southwestern fashionistas. I found antique garments from the Old West, vintage bandannas and serapes, mid-century dude ranch togs, fringed and beaded suede jackets, artisanal shoulder bags, tooled leather belts, old Hollywood Western costumes, and turquoise jewelry. (Oh, so much turquoise jewelry!)
How to Rock the Southwestern Look
The Southwestern look is having a major moment this year so it’s really in the spotlight, but it’s also an American classic. As such, consider each piece you buy as an investment. Curious how you put it all together without looking like an extra from West World? Just keep it subtle.
For a casual look, choose one high-impact piece, like a squash blossom necklace or a fringed suede jacket. Keep the rest of your ensemble earthy and minimal, with matte textures and a Southwestern color palette. Go with basic cowboy boots in classic colors or, for warmer weather, lighter shoes that riff on the cowboy boot style. Lean toward an updated silhouette but root your look in the history, culture and artisanal heritage of the American Southwest and you can’t go wrong! You can find endless styling inspiration on our Wilder Southwest Pinterest fashion boards. Most of the garments and accessories I saw at the Great Southwestern Antique & Vintage Show were sturdy and wearable, with the kind of cool vibe normally reserved for stylists, celebrities, and rock stars. Some of the items were more fragile show pieces but great for design inspiration. In fact, the Ralph Lauren folks attend regularly to shop for their inspiration archive.
But wait! There’s more!
If all that weren’t enough, ticket proceeds are dedicated to the enhancement of arts and education in New Mexico.
