Yerba Botanicals Natural Luxury Bath & Body Products

Hi Wild Ones!

If winter’s chill has left your skin looking less than lustrous, our stunning Southwestern landscape has provided everything you need to be beautiful again. Yerba mansa, a perennial herb found in New Mexico, is the wonder-ingredient in Yerba Botanicals, a body care line from New Mexico.

Yerba Botanicals founder Rita Chavez kindly gifted me samples of her products last fall. I’ve been so impressed at their effectiveness that they’re now staples in my bathroom and makeup bag. Rita and I chatted last week about her product line and how she got started.

Yerba Botanicals Lip Balm

WSW: Rita, I’d never heard of yerba mansa until I met you. What can you tell us about it, and why did you decide to use it in a skincare line?

Yerba mansa has been a regional staple in New Mexico for many years. It’s been used in tinctures and topical remedies due to its natural antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities. My family’s history is documented in this region as far back as the early 1600’s, and we’ve been farming and harvesting yerba mansa for generations. It was my family who taught me how to make basic tinctures and topical remedies with a yerba mansa base.

In time, I felt inspired to develop a line of personal care products with yerba mansa as a main ingredient so I could share its benefits with others. I felt confident that that I could take the base knowledge I had acquired growing up and pursue further knowledge through study and taking classes.

I really wanted to focus on taking the inspiration I draw from my native New Mexico and make something that is a healthy, natural alternative to some of what is available in personal care products.

WSW: I’m always cautious about what I put on my skin. So once I received your samples, I did a bit of research. The Santa Fe Botanical Garden website shows that the plant was already known and used medicinally by the early Spanish settlers. A scholarly article published in 2014 in the journal Planta Medica cited its widespread use among Native American populations. Their initial research findings about the plant’s medicinal benefits for treating inflammation and infection were impressive! Since yerba’s had such a long history of successful use, and scholars are waking up to its benefits, I decided it might be just what my dry, sensitive skin needed. I tried it, and I’m so glad I did!

Many people are sensitive to the harsh chemicals that are in most skincare products on the market. I wanted to make an all-natural alternative. So, after researching additional plant and herb-based ingredients, I thoughtfully started to experiment with various combinations.

WSW: And, in doing so, you’ve come up with a few different product lines. Correct?

Yes. My Body Rescue line is made with the highest quality ingredients and essential oils. It can be used to address many issues, such as itchy and dry skin, rashes, cuts, insect bites, and as an insect repellent. It can also aid in soothing and healing various skin conditions. Aside from generous quantities of yerba mansa, the Rescue Line also contains soothing essentials such as frankincense, cedarwood, and rosemary. These work well with the yerba as they are considered to have natural anti-fungal, astringent, and anti-inflammatory properties.

I also produce a line of lush bath and body products with Yerba Mansa as the main ingredient. I created them with three original, natural scents inspired by the beauty of my native New Mexico: Jemez Rain, Turquoise Trail, and Sandia Prickly Pear.

WSW: I love all of your products, but I’m particularly enamored of the Turquoise Trail scent, which is just so fresh, clean and herbal. My other favorites are your body cream, which softens and soothes my skin at its driest, and the Hair & Body Shine, which really freshens my hair when it’s looking dry. And your Body Rescue Salve is a lifesaver for dry cuticles! What’s next for Yerba Botanicals?

Yerba Botanicals is ever evolving. I thrive off of feedback of any kind and am always brainstorming and getting ideas of what else to make or how I can improve my products.

WSW: Thank you so much for sharing with us, Rita.
